My parents have experienced three levels of care at the Highlands. They went from independent living in a lovely home, to an apartment in the Maine Lodge to assisted living in Cadigan Lodge. The respectful, caring support in making each transition was incredible. My mother's decline into the need for Hospice support was supported in the same way; with respect, skill and genuine compassion. Our whole family was supported during this difficult transition up until and beyond the moment she left us. I truly felt that the Highlands staff were our extended family, offering open ears, arms and doors, and accepting our grief as they also provided gentle, attentive care to my mother. She truly died the most peaceful death one could imagine. I cannot say enough about The Highlands!!!
The Highlands is a beautiful facility and we were very impressed with it. The staff was so attentive and informative. They offer so many activities for the people who live there in the memory care area, and the rooms were beautiful. It really felt like a home for the residents.
General speaking, the overall experience has been very good. There are many activities to choose from, and my wife and I have been trying Some, partly because we both are very active, but also to meet and get to know more of the residents. The people we have gotten to know are very nice, and come from varied backgrounds and interests. Some of the communications with staff have been slow to get resolved, but that is getting better, as we've never lived in a cooperative community. We have a lovely home, and our son is living with us, as he has some special needs. When we hit the great beyond he will have priority to move into an apartment with meals and housekeeping, so this was a great relief for us. We mostly make our own meals, ut have had several excellent dinners here, and others have said the phone is above average. The maintenance crew and others have said staff are really helpful. All in all, above what we expected.
Basically 5s across them all. After 2 no injury falls, a 3 plus day stay in hospital, dad went back to his apt w/ hospice care. The staff at Highlands went above & beyond to care for him in his final days. They were gentle, took time to explain to him what they were doing, all this while he was "sleeping". They even were caring to us, his family, providing for our needs! From admin to maintenence, nurses to caregivers they all looked in on dad, & us. They were truly blessings from God, each in their own unique & special way. I thank God every day for them.
As we plan for future Senior Living, the tour of The Highlands was very pleasant and informative. [name removed] shared extensive information and answered all of our questions. The facilities are attractive and inviting both inside and out. In addition to the apartments, the facilities offered comfortable areas for numerous activities - open and extensive library, piano for residents’ use, plus a variety of programs and committees. Pool and fitness center and salon are on site. We enjoyed a tasty lunch from a varied menu in a cheerful dining room. A variety of programs and committees are available if a resident is interested. Both shared areas and private apartments are spacious, nicely decorated and inviting. The staff and residents we met were very friendly.
A majority of the staff are friendly, helpful, ready to help dad. Polite, patient, even when he is not. The apt is a good size, & there are other spaces if one needs company: a community room, library, gym, pool, etc. The residents have many of activities to join, on sight & off sight, tours to towns in the area; out to eating establishments. And having eaten at the dining room a few times, I can attest to how delicious the meals are, & there is more than enough! The cleaning staff keeps dad's apt neat & clean; daily remove the trash; & laundry is once a week, but if needed more they will do so. They also make sure he gets his meds daily.
Highlands has so many activities to keep residents busy and adequate staff to coordinate and transport residents to events. The facility itself is well maintained and has those extra touches that make the difference ie the exercise center, library, multiple dining areas and especially the lanyard system that provides emergency response. It's very comforting to know emergency response is only a few minutes away when needed.
My brother and sister recently toured the Highlands so I am reporting on what they told me. They were welcomed and were struck by how friendly the staff and residents are. They found the facilities attractive.
I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident I've been to The Highlands in Topsham, and I like the people there. I went with a friend who was visiting her mother at their independent living community, and I enjoyed that very much. I liked that the rooms that I looked at had a screened-in porch. I thought that was great, because I have a screen porch that I love too. I love having those places that are accessible to the outdoors. I found the rooms were kind of small, and I wasn't thrilled about that. I had lunch there and that was very good. Another thing I don't like is that it's not walkable to anything else, although it is walkable to a school. I'm a retired teacher and do volunteer work here, so that would be a good possibility for me living there. There wasn't really anything that stood out that I didn't like, except that the rooms were small. I spoke to several of the people who live there, I went to the library for a while to look around, and I got into a conversation with someone in the library, and they were very positive.
I visited this facility We toured The Highlands. They were very professional, friendly, and informative. They took us into the memory care unit, where we interacted with residents and got their own impressions of how things were, and they were very accommodating and inviting. So, it's a premier facility. They're all individual private rooms, and they're comparable in size to the other facilities we toured. The dining area is the size of a restaurant. It was enough for 30 or more people, and the wait staff and the menu were great. The food was good. It was restaurant quality. We had lunch, so it was lighter than the dinner menu.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can’t say enough wonderful things about The Highlands in Topsham, Maine. From the moment I stepped onto the property, I was struck by its beauty—immaculate grounds, peaceful walking paths, and charming architecture that truly feels like home. What impressed me most, though, was the exceptional level of care my loved one is receiving. Every member of the staff is warm, professional, and incredibly attentive. They treat residents with compassion, respect, and genuine kindness. It gives me tremendous peace of mind knowing he’s in such good hands. The facilities are spotless, thoughtfully designed, and filled with natural light. Every detail—from the cozy common areas to the organized activities—reflects how much this community values quality of life. The Highlands has exceeded every expectation. Highly, highly recommend!
Very pleased with the facility. Met all the criteria we were looking for to find a good home for my mother. Rebecca was absolutely wonderful to work with as was Adam!
The Highlands: place, staff and residents have been excellent! I would definitely recommend if: you enjoy art, music, gardening and the company of residents who are retired teachers and professors.
I have been at the Highlands for several months and am thrilled to be here. Everyone is helpful and kind and I already feel like I belong. I have met many nice people and look forward to every day!
I feel very fortunate to have gotten into The Highlands without having to wait for years. The staff have been so helpful in getting us settled. As a same sex couple, the acceptance and genuine friendliness of both neighbors and staff has been incredible!
A lovely place with lovely people.
I visited this facility The Highlands was a nice place. The staff seemed to be pretty courteous. The rooms and the common areas seemed very nice and very clean.
I like it. Well kept.
I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident My husband was a resident of The Highlands. We like the people who work there and he got the care as best as he could. The staff was great. The food was great. I mean, the first day there, they wanted me to eat with them and the food looked very, very good each time I was there and he ate well. The facility was beautiful. I would see them even though they were sitting in the chair, and there was a girl doing exercises with them. They kept as busy as they wanted the patients to be. All companies everywhere need extra help and they just can't get it, but he was not neglected or anything. If he was still living and had to go back after surgery there, that would have been the place I would have put him again.
My mom passed away at the end of June- I have only positive things to say about The Highlands and their staff. Overall the facilities were great and the staff were very caring to my mom and to my family in her final days and I would recommend The Highlands to those who can afford it.
I am/was a resident of this facility I moved to The Highlands. I've been here several times, and everybody's very nice both the staff and the residents. Whatever I need, they get it for me. So, I'm very happy here. They come and check on me. They say hello and remember my name. They are nice people. My apartment has wood floors so I can go around with my wheelchair in good shape. They gave you an easy chair and the fellow came by yesterday and made sure the TVs were working. I get my meals from my room. They have a fitness center and lots of fitness courses from easy to harder because some of the residents have different abilities. There's a grand parlor where people come in and do something. Almost every day there's some kind of presentation. In the summer they have a big tent outside and so they have activities under that. They do up the rent every time, and I had a little problem with my care level the last time I was here. For the most part, you get your money's worth.
My father moved to the Highlands in 2022, and I couldn't be happier with his move. The staff are incredibly professional and friendly, and after just a few visits they knew who I was and who I was there to visit. I am always greeted warmly. The food is delicious, the programs available to the residents are amazing, and I feel very happy knowing that my dad is in a safe place with people who care about him. I highly recommend the Highlands for senior living and care.
The caregivers are all very kind and thoughtful. There could be more activities that involve people rather than television. Such as "work outs" have someone doing it as an instructor rather than a tv program.
After one year, I cannot think of another place where my brother could be better served. Facility has a resident population large enough to enable individuals to connect with others. Staff has been great and tries to connect with the residents. There are a good number of activities available. Food gets high marks. Health/dental referrals have all worked out well, with almost all these services very close by.
We have lived here for over ten years. We have become active in the community (both The Highlands and Topsham/Brunswick), enjoy our neighbors, and all that The Highlands has to offer, which is a lot!. It is pet-friendly, which is important to us. Come for a visit—-you won’t be disappointed.
I visited this facility We liked The Highlands. We looked at assisted living and independent care. What I liked the best was the cleanliness and organization. It was well done. We chose it because of the location. It was centrally located where all the kids were located. The staff was great. She was knowledgeable. She helped us identify some of the questions that we didn't even know to ask. She was very engaging and very accommodating. She was good. We went to two of the rooms. They were very nice, clean, and cozy. They were just exactly what my father might need if and when we get to that point. I've got several emails from them to come back and bring Dad back and sit down and have a meal and experience it. They're very accommodating that way. The dining area was open-air. It was nice. It wasn't isolated. The people could sit together. There were activities. There was a library and an exercise area. I think they're very good at what they do. The place was clean and accommodating. There was plenty of staff. I got a good feeling, better than all the rest of the places we toured.
We investigated every retirement community from Scarborough to Topsham before making the difficult decision to leave our wonderful home in West Bath. As residents of The Highlands for five years, we can't say enough in praise of the facility and its staff. It's a walking community, everything within easy reach. Friendly neighbors add to the pleasure of living here.
Been here 11 years and are still extremely pleased we made the move.
My loved one is currently a resident at The Highlands and everything has been very good for her at this facility so far. The cleanliness and friendliness are great. The staff has been wonderful. The care services and meals have been great. The activities have been good. I feel like the value for cost is good. Overall, I would recommend The Highlands to family and friends.
